What to Expect at an Ayahuasca Retreat in Iquitos, Peru
If you're thinking about an ayahuasca retreat, you probably have plenty of questions. What does a day actually look like? Who leads the ceremonies? How do you get there, and what happens after you go home? This guide covers what to expect at Rebirth Healing Center, a small ayahuasca retreat in the Amazon near Iquitos, Peru, so you can decide whether it's right for you.
We'll be honest from the start. Ayahuasca isn't a quick fix, and nobody can promise you a particular outcome. What we can tell you is how we run things: small groups, ceremonies led by indigenous shamans, a steady daily rhythm, and support before, during, and after your time with us.
Where the Retreat Is: The Amazon Near Iquitos
Rebirth Healing Center is in the Peruvian Amazon near Iquitos, in the Santa María del Ojeal area. You get here by boat up Sinchicuy Creek. That boat ride is often the moment when guests feel the city fall away and the jungle take over.
Guests should arrive in Iquitos the day before. On the morning of day 1, you meet the group at a central Iquitos hotel lobby (the exact hotel is shared after booking), then travel with the group to the center. You don't need to work out jungle transport on your own.
Who Leads the Ceremonies
Our ayahuasca ceremonies are indigenous ceremonies led by indigenous shamans. Rather than building something new, we offer this tradition in the setting it comes from: the Amazon rainforest.
During every ceremony, sober support staff are present. They don't drink, so someone clear-headed is always available if you need help, reassurance, or just a steady presence nearby.
A Small Group: No More Than 6 Guests
We keep groups to a maximum of 6 guests. A small group means:
More personal attention from the shamans and support staff
A quieter, more settled ceremony space
Time to get to know the people you're sharing the experience with
We also work with trauma awareness. Ceremonies can bring up difficult memories and emotions, and we aim to respond with patience, respect, and care rather than pressure.
A Sample Week at Rebirth Healing Center
Here's what a typical 7-day week looks like. Excursions can shift with the weather and the river, but the overall rhythm stays the same.
Day 1: Arrival and Orientation
Guests should arrive in Iquitos the day before. On the morning of day 1, you meet the group at a central Iquitos hotel lobby (the exact hotel is shared after booking), then travel with the group to the center. You'll settle in and attend an orientation where you learn how the week works and can ask questions.
Day 2: Jungle Excursion and Ceremony 1
Your first day includes a jungle excursion, and in the evening you take part in your first ayahuasca ceremony.
Day 3: Rest, Plant Bath, and Sound Bath
A gentle day. You'll have time to rest, receive a plant bath, and join a group sound bath.
Day 4: Ceremony 2
Your second ayahuasca ceremony.
Day 5: Rest
Unstructured time for rest and reflection. Many guests find these quiet days just as important as ceremony days.
Day 6: Ceremony 3 and Sound Bath
Your third ceremony, along with a group sound bath.
Day 7: Closing Circle, Integration Talk, and Departure
The week ends with a closing circle and an integration talk to help you think about what to take home. Then we return you to Iquitos.
Daily Practices Between Ceremonies
What happens between ceremonies matters too. Depending on the day, you may join:
Hatha yoga on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays with Greg Forret
Group sound healing with handpan and singing bowls
Plant baths, a traditional practice that's part of the rhythm of the week
Jungle Excursions
Jungle excursions give you a way to get to know the Amazon outside the ceremony space. Where we go depends on the weather and the water level, so we can't guarantee a specific destination. Excursions include:
The giant lupuna tree: a 90-minute hike to the largest tree in the area, said to be home of Chuyachaki, the protector spirit of the jungle.
Local communities: visits to communities in the area.
Retreat Packages
We currently offer two retreat lengths:
7-Day Week: $875
3 ayahuasca ceremonies
1 jungle excursion
No plant dieta
Optional Kambo: $50
10-Day Retreat: $1000
4 ayahuasca ceremonies
2 jungle excursions
Master Plant Dietas
Master plant dietas are available after a consultation. Tobacco and toé are not offered as dietas. Reach out to talk through whether a dieta fits what you're looking for.
Safety and Screening
Your safety matters more than anything else on this list.
Intake screening: Every guest goes through intake screening before the retreat. This helps us understand your health, history, and intentions, and decide together whether the retreat is a good fit.
Disclose all medications: Please tell us about every medication and supplement you take. Some, such as SSRIs and other antidepressants, can interact with ayahuasca in dangerous ways.
Talk to your doctor: Before you book, consult your doctor about your medications and health. Don't stop or change any medication without your doctor's guidance.
Sober support: Sober staff are present during every ceremony.
Ayahuasca is not a medical treatment, and a retreat is not a replacement for care from a qualified health professional.
After the Retreat: Integration
Integration means making sense of your experience and bringing it into everyday life. Before you leave, we hold an integration talk, and after you get home we schedule one follow-up call to check in and talk through how things are going.
Is an Ayahuasca Retreat in Iquitos Right for You?
Only you can answer that, ideally after honest reflection and a conversation with your doctor. If a small, grounded retreat with indigenous ceremonies deep in the Amazon sounds right, we'd be glad to talk.
